The Universitätsmedizin Essen is a hospital group that includes 15 subsidiaries in addition to the Universitätsklinikum Essen. With around 11,000 employees and 1,700 beds, UME is the leading healthcare centre in the Ruhr region.
Email is still the most important communication medium for the hospital group, especially for external communication. With over 45,000 incoming emails every day, the internal IT department was exposed to a variety of cyber threats, particularly through attachments and sophisticated forms of attack. Another enormous challenge for the company is the discrepancy between various binding compliance requirements such as healthcare regulations, for example with regard to confidentiality, the GDPR or KRITIS requirements, and on the other hand the wide variety of senders of emails with attachments in a wide range of formats and other regulations that apply abroad.
In order to meet the constantly growing challenges of digital communication and increasing compliance requirements, UME wanted to completely reorganise its IT security and created an email policy that would apply company-wide like a law. As all parts of this policy could be implemented with NoSpamProxy Server, the hospital group’s internal IT department opted for the BSZ-certified solution from the Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI). NoSpamProxy proved to be a flexible tool for UME to efficiently implement security guidelines.
The elimination of quarantine folders is particularly advantageous for the hospital network. Thanks to the consistent approach, emails are either delivered or rejected, which significantly reduces the workload for both users and IT administrators. If an email has not been delivered, the sender is notified and can respond. Another milestone is the partner settings: Customised rules for individual communication partners allow UME IT to control exactly which file formats and content are accepted and by whom. This minimises the risk of potentially harmful content and ensures compliance at the same time. Content filtering, which is based on the recommendations of the BSI basic protection catalogue and specifies how different file formats should be handled, is also an important component of the IT security concept at Universitätsmedizin Essen.
„With Net at Work, we have a partner at our side who fulfils all our requirements for a reliable and comprehensive email solution. NoSpamProxy is also easy to manage for a company of our size, which noticeably reduces the workload on our IT.“
The reliable support from Net at Work and the fast response time of the German manufacturer create additional trust and security, decisive criteria for a company in the KRITIS environment.
With NoSpamProxy, Universitätsmedizin Essen can now not only fully implement its self-imposed email policy, but also benefit from the expert know-how of a manufacturer that is very familiar with the security situation and compliance requirements in the hospital environment in Germany.
