Open Keys solves this problem with a centralized, product- and vendor-neutral directory service. The service aggregates numerous public key sources and enables automated searches for certificates for S/MIME- and PGP-based email encryption. Only trusted key material is provided: For S/MIME, only certificates from trusted certification authorities (CAs) are published. For PGP, ownership of the private key and access to the associated email inbox are verified via an encrypted confirmation email. This allows public keys to be found automatically and used for secure communication.

When used with NoSpamProxy Encryption, the key search is fully automated. Public certificates are identified in the background and used for encryption. Open Keys is available in both NoSpamProxy Server and NoSpamProxy Cloud. In addition, Managed Certificates enables the automated provisioning, management, and renewal of S/MIME certificates. This makes secure email communication simpler, more efficient, and more scalable.

What is Open Keys?

The service offered by the website openkeys.de allows users to provide or find so-called public keys from organizations and individuals. Public keys can be used to encrypt emails sent to these organizations and individuals.

Why should I publish my certificate or PGP key?

Publishing your public certificate or PGP key allows your communication partners to send you encrypted emails. As the recipient, you no longer need to take any action, since you do not have to provide the sender with any keys.

Can I use Open Keys via an LDAP connection?

To connect to Open Keys via the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), use the following settings:

Hostname: ldap.openkeys.de
Port: 389 (standard LDAP) or 636 (LDAPS)
Authentication: Anonymous
Fields: userCertificate;binary (for X.509 certificates), pGPKey (for PGP keys)

Anonymous access is limited to approximately one query per second. If you need more queries, you will need an API key. You can obtain this from your contact at Net at Work by providing the following information:

Is email encryption accessible to users without IT knowledge?

Yes, email encryption with NoSpamProxy is designed to be usable by users without specialized IT knowledge. Encryption takes place automatically in the background based on centrally defined rules. Optionally, a user can trigger signatures and encryption using the NoSpamProxy Outlook add-in.

Employees can compose and send emails as usual in Outlook or other email programs. Complex processes such as certificate management, key exchange, and policy control are managed centrally by the IT department.

This makes secure email encryption practical for everyday use and user-friendly within the company, without requiring additional training or presenting technical hurdles for users.
